Get back to nature

Updated: Mar 22, 2021

Lovely place to go hiking and enjoy beautiful views and return to basics and nature . Amazing sounds and wildlife also.

Kenting National Park has been for my friends and I the main reason to go to southern Taiwan. There is a lot to do and one could easily spend several days here.

The highlight of southern Taiwan

"Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better."

Mount Dajian, an impressive rock, which rises for about 300 meters like a tooth out of the forest, is the parks landmark and can be seen from many places. There are some wonderful beaches and opportunities for diving. Actually the park also extends into the surrounding sea.

Here are a few tips for would be visitors to Kenting National Park. These are first hand lessons learnt from my recent trip in June 2019.

1. Kenting National Park refers to a large area in Kenting that bears names of other scenic places, including "mountains" (which are actually hills but directly translated from Chinese name) and natural coastal phenomena, beaches etc. It includes a park called Kenting National Park. Both Kenting National Park and Kenting National Park (HQ) have visitor centres. Hence, it can be quite confusing.

2. Do not trust the weather forecast you read on internet. We thought we were expecting 26-31 degrees celcius with thunderstorm. We went prepared for rain but it was a scorching 39 degrees or so. We were told by locals that there is no weather station there. Weather forecast is done in Kaohsiung. Choosing a more friendly weather would make your visit more pleasant.

3. If you are planning to drive, do note that drivers are required to produce International Driving Permit (not International Driving Licence). And this cannot be applied for on the spot.

Very clean and well maintained park. Refreshing winds keep you cool but you need strong legs to hold yourselves to the ground. The ancient cave and narrow gorge are along the way and even saw a salamander hiding in the dug out tree. There is a small museum at the lighthouse. All in all, a good place to visit!
